Introduction

The Anjel Perumal Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a significant religious site located in Agaram Village in the Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India.

Puranic Significance

Legend of Its Origin: According to legend, a theatre artist named Mithrasaga from Agaram Village was known for spreading the glory of Lord Vishnu through his Dasavathara dramas. The Lord, pleased with his devotion, is said to have appeared and granted him the “Ohm Namo Baghavate Vasudevaya” mantra. This incident led to the temple being called the Dasavathara Kshetram.
Tamirabarani Mahatmiyam: The temple is associated with the sacred River Tamirabarani, and a bath in the Dasavathara Theertham at this temple is believed to be equivalent to taking a bath in the Ganges in Varanasi.
Renovation: The temple suffered damage due to floods in the early 20th century, but the Dasavatharam idols remained intact. Extensive renovation work, including building walls around the temple and a parikara mandapam, was undertaken in 2003. The Kumbabishekam, or consecration, was performed in July 2009.

Beliefs

Prayers are for removal of obstacles in marriage talks, for child boon and distinction in education. Devotees perform Tirumanjanam and offer vastras to Perumal. The Anjel Perumal Temple is situated about 30 kilometers from Trichy, on the banks of the Tamaraibarani River. The temple is located east of Thirunelveli, off the Tuticorin highway.

Special Features

Dasavatharam Idols: This temple is unique in India as it houses all the ten incarnations (Dasavatharam) of Lord Vishnu in one single stone sculpture. Each of these incarnations represents a specific Navagraha (celestial body), and the temple is considered a Parihara Sthalam, offering remedies for various doshas, including Pitru Dosham (parental curse).

The temple is dedicated to Lord Anjel Perumal (Vishnu), and people also worship other deities like Masi Perianna Swamy and Yegambareswarar. There are open grounds for the worship of various other gods and goddesses (pathivugal).
