Introduction

Adiyakkamangalam Asupatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Adiyakkamangalam village, Thiruvarur circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Here the Presiding deity is called as Asupatheeswarar (Pasupadeeswarar) and Mother is called as Mangalambikai. This town is located at a distance of 6 km on Thiruvarur- Keevalur road. There are three Shiva temples here. Out of the three temples, two temples are dedicated as Kashi Vishwanath and one as Asupathiswarar. As the Lord was worshiped by animals, the name of the Lord is Asupathiswarar. This may cause asuvamangalam to become adiyakkamangalam.

Puranic Significance

During the reign of Rajaraja Chola I, this place was a village under the claim of Tiruvarur of Chatriyasikamanivalanattu. The name of this town was given as Adiyappimangalam and Adiyappiya Chaturvedimangalam a thousand years ago. Chaturvedimangalathusabaiyar, who accepted the responsibility of implementing this order, has effectively implemented it when Sembian Mathewiyar donated 234 coins to the temple he built in Tiruvarur. The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.

As the whole town has come from other religions, there are only Hindus in the small street where the temple is located. The legendary temple is no longer there. The small temple towards the east has been changed to Pasupathiswarar as Lord Asupatheeswarar and it has been written on the facade.

The Lord with a small sanctum is towards the east; on either side is Vinayagar Murugan, small Nandi and altar. Tenmugan is in the attic of the sanctum sanctorum. Sandesardani is in the shrine. The deity is facing south with his temple, and on a platform nearby is Bhairavar Suryan Sammandar. Sammandar’s presence has become the pride of the temple.
