Introduction
- Location: The Abhaya Varadeeshwarar Temple is located in Adirampattinam, Tamil Nadu.
- History:
- This ancient temple is nearly 2000 years old and was originally known as Tiru Adhirai Pattinam, named after the Thiruvadirai star.
- King Adhiveerarama Pandian, a devotee of Lord Abhaya Varadeeswarar, renovated the temple and the town was renamed Adhi Veera Raman Pattinam, eventually becoming Adirampattinam.
- Special Significance:
- This temple is considered to be especially auspicious for those born under the Thiruvadirai Nakshathira.
- Lord Shiva in the main sanctum is believed to bless His devotees with His Three Eyes, symbolizing His divine vision and protection.
- Goddess Sundaranayaki, also known as Kadal Paartha Nayaki (meaning “She who faces the sea”), is the consort of Lord Shiva in this temple.
- The temple is also famous for the belief that Siddhas (spiritual beings) offer their prayers here invisibly.
- Thirugyanasambandar and Sundarar, two great saints, have sung hymns praising the temple, and it is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams (temples praised in the hymns of these saints).
Significance for Thiruvadirai Nakshathira
- Remedy for Troubles:
- People born under the Thiruvadirai Nakshathira are believed to be relieved from various troubles if they pray to Lord Abhaya Varadeeswarar.
- It is particularly beneficial for individuals born in this star to visit the temple on Pradosha days or their Thiruvadirai star days.
- Thiruvadirai girls experiencing difficulties in marriage are advised to visit the temple regularly and offer vastras (clothes) to the Lord and Goddess as a form of prayer.
Puranic Significance
- The Protection of the Devas:
- The Devas (gods) were being harassed by the Asuras (demons) and sought protection from Lord Shiva in His Thiruvadirai or Aadirai form.
- This form, also known as the Arudhra or Rudra form, is said to manifest during the Thiruvadirai Star days and Pradosha days (the 13th day from the Full Moon or New Moon).
- Lord Shiva protected the Devas by vanquishing the demons, earning Him the name Abhaya Varadeeswarar, meaning “The One Who Protects Those Who Surrender to Him”.
- Rishi Raivada is believed to have been born from the light emitted from Lord Shiva’s third eye on a Thiruvadirai Star Day. This is why he is also known as Raivada Rishi.
Beliefs
- Trinetra (Three Eyes):
- In this temple, Lord Shiva is believed to grace His devotees with His three eyes, symbolizing His all-seeing, protective power as Abhaya Varadeeshwarar.
- This temple is often visited by people seeking relief from the negative effects of Rahu and Ketu in their horoscopes, as these planets are believed to cause significant troubles.
- Similar to Thirukadayur, a temple dedicated to overcoming the fear of death, the Abhaya Varadeeshwarar Temple is also considered an important center for long life and protection from death.
- Special rituals like the Mruthyunjaya Homa (ritual to overcome Lord Yama, the god of death) and Ayush Homa (ritual for longevity) are performed by devotees seeking long life and relief from the fear of death.
