A FISHERMAN (ADIPATHTHAR NAYANAR) AND HIS UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO LORD SHIVA

Adipatthar, a devout follower of Lord Shiva, resided in the Chola Kingdom, specifically in present-day Naagapattinam, also known as Naagai, situated along the seashore. He belonged to the Paradhavar community, whose livelihood depended on fishing.

In a heartfelt gesture of devotion, Adipatthar would offer the very first fish caught each day back to Lord Shiva, even if it meant he would go hungry. He faithfully practiced this ritual, regardless of whether he caught only one fish, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the divine.

Despite facing days of receiving just one fish, Adipatthar continued to joyfully dedicate it to Lord Shiva, expressing his love and gratitude. This selfless act led to his gradual impoverishment, yet he remained steadfast in his devotion.

One day, a remarkable event occurred when Adipatthar’s clan caught a large golden fish adorned with nine types of gems. Despite its splendor, Adipatthar recognized it as the first catch of the day and chose to offer it back to Lord Shiva with joy.

Touched by Adipatthar’s sincere devotion, Lord Shiva, the divine dancer of the golden court, decided to test him no more. Descending from the heavens, Lord Shiva blessed Adipatthar and his community, declaring that they would forever remain under his divine protection.

Thus, through his unwavering faith and selfless devotion, Adipatthar earned a place of glory in the presence of Lord Shiva himself, exemplifying the power of love and dedication to the divine.
