Introduction

Nallur is located on the Kattumannarkoil-Chidambaram main road on the ninth km. Here in a beautiful small temple facing east, Gnanapuriswarar and Gnanambika bless from here.During the renovation of Thirunaraiyur in 1929, the NattukottaiChettiars also renovated this temple. Puranic Significance

A long time ago. While the sage Durvasa was in deep meditation, some of the Gandharvas went by air in their golden planesThe sage’s penance was disturbed when when the nuts Gandharvas had put down fell on Durvasar .In a fit of rage Durvasa cursed the gandarva to turn into stork Durvasa advised Gandharva that he would stay there and anoint Lord Shiva with Ganga water and get the curse lifted . When the Gandharva in the form of Stroke brought water from Kashi, a severe storm and rain came and the wings of the stork, were broken and fell off due to the speed of the wind.Thus the place where the wings of the stork fell is given as the place were wings were lost. Despite loss of wings stork came crawling and worshiped Lord and had the curse lifted even though he was in trouble. That is why Naraiyur was given as Thirunaraiyur.
