Introduction

This temple is located at a distance of 13 km. in Kumbakonam-Chennai highway, in Cholapuram. This place was known as Bhairavapuram. This temple belonged to Chola period. Without any structure in the entrance, it has only the base of the front mandapa. On either side of the garbhagriha, Vinayaka are found. Near to him Subramania is found. The goddess is facing south. The presiding deity is known as Bhairavesvarar and the goddess is known as Bhairavesvari. This is the place where Bairava appeared in the form of Shiva. So, the presiding deity, who is in the Lingam form is known as Bhairavesvarar. It is said that 64 Bharaivas have appeared in this place and the first Bhairava also came from this place. In the shrine of the goddess, only the face of the deity is found.

Puranic Significance

This is an ancient chola granite temple with high sculptural value. The approachh road and the surrounded areas are completely encroached by the locals. There is no proper entrances to the temple.Only the basement of the mukalandapam remains. Nandi and balipeedam can be found facing the sanctum. Lord Shiva in this temple is a swayambumurthi. He is housed in the Sanctum in the form of big Lingam. He is facing east. Vinayaga and murugan can be found in the emtrances of the Sanctum. Vinayaga, Nataraja, Gangalamoorthy, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhava, Brahma, Alinganamoorthy, Durga Ashtabuia Bhairava are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls.In this temple eight hand Bhairava is found. Here 64 peetas are found. It is believed that 64 Bhairavas, worshipped and did pujas and dhyāna in these 64 peetas. In this temple Ardhanarishvara, Durga with eight hands, Dakshinamurthy, Gangadharar and Kalyanasundara are also found. This is Considered as the MoolaSthaanam of all the different forms of Bhairavas in the whole universe. The ancient name of this place is Bhairavapuram

Festivals

On Saturdays special pujas are held here. Abhishekams, Homam And Anndhanam are grandly done here on Krishna Paksha Astami.
