Introduction

In Sangameshwar the two rivers Sonavi and Shastri flow together. The meaning of Sangama in Marathi (and most Indian languages) is confluence, and so the name “Sangameshwar”. It is historically important as the place where Sambhajiraje, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji (Shivaji Raje) was captured by Mughal Emperor. Chhatrapati Sambhaji was tortured and executed in Tulapur. This temple is complete ruins. The idol of the temple is bad shape. This temple was built in the11 th century. Due to passage of time, only a few temples survive. And the reason they have survived is may be because they have been well hidden by the thick, nearly impenetrable jungles. The temples display remarkable architecture and are adorned with truly artistically carved idols.
