Introduction

There are two or three towns by the name of Maruthuvakkudi, one near Aduthurai and one near Nachiyarkoil, 3km west of Thiruvizhimizhalai on the banks of the Arasala.Maruthuvakkudi is located in the Kudavasal circle in the Thiruvarur district. Lord is Sarguneswarar, the name of the Goddess is unknown. To the east is the temple, which has a three-tiered royal tower, to the south is a small gate, and the sanctum sanctorum has a faccade connecting the two sanctuaries. The Lord is the great linga idol who is the healer of all diseases. The goddess is also in beautiful form.A slightly deformed large lingam in front of the south face lies in a misaligned position. Ganesha and Goddess Valli are set up for SamethaMurugan. In the northeast there is a shrine to both Bhairava, Saturn. Nandi is in a small hall directly opposite the Lord. To the left of the Rajagopuram is a small hall-like shrine. Adjacent to it is a broken Ganesha and a Bhairava statue lying in a broken state.

Puranic Significance

Legend has it that when Lord Shiva came to Thiruvizhimizhalai to show the wedding to Sage Agathar, the bridegroom left Nallur for the wedding, and the Sapta Rishis who were with him at the time stayed at the Maruthuvakkudi and completed their pujas and went to Thiruvizhimizhalai. Manavalanallur is located on the south bank of the river. There are still lingams in some places, today as a symbol of the Sapta Rishis performing Sivapooja at the Maruthuvakkudi. There are twovlingamson the banks of the river and one in the temple alone.Lord Shiva forgot to worship Ganesha before leaving for Thiruvizhimizhalai,so the stalk of the palak on which he went was broken, he realized the mistake he had made and immediately consecrated a Ganesha and left.There are two Perumal temples in the town. # “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K.
