Introduction

The Karunapureeswarar Shiva Temple is located in the village of Kazhukkaani Muttam in the Mayiladuthurai district. Kazhukkaani refers to the Vengai tree. Muttam should also be considered as a riverside town. The overflowing rivers of the Cauvery made the lands of the region part of a triangular crop. This is the area where Parvati looked like a peacock looking at the green silk lands. One of the Sapta Matars, Varagi is the place where Goddess Amma was worshiped. The Goddess has a sanctum facing south and a long hall connects the two sanctuaries. The sanctum sanctorum includes Durga, Brahman, Linkodhava, Dakshinamurti and Narthana Ganesha. There is a Ganesha temple in the northwest and a large Murugan temple in the southwest. To the northeast is the lingam where Saturn Bhairav and Seelavathi were worshiped, and in the long hall to the south east is the lingam where Kulothungan II was worshiped and the idol of Vishnu. There is also a lingam dedicated to Durvasar. There is also a statue of Goddess Silavati nearby. There is a large arch tree and a well in front of the south face. The temple is beginning to crumble completely without maintenance. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.

Puranic Significance

Seelavathi Ammaiyar, who excelled in Shiva devotion in this city, used to eat herself and her son after preparing food for the servants. At this stage Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and the devotees came to the house of Seelavathi in the form of Adiyar. Adiyar told the two to take a dip in the opposite pond and prepare delicious food before they arrived. But, her only son, to eat the food without enduring hunger, saw it and became angry, and the world beat her son to death. The battered son died. But, not caring about it, she left her son around on a mat and prepared fresh food, Seelavathi. She greeted the Sivanadiars who had left the bath, put a banana leaf and started serving food. He said, “Call the child, and he will come.” The child who had curled up on the mat to call the mother came up alive. Seeing this miracle, Silavathiyar flexed his arms and folded his arms. Eason graced the scene in the Rishabha vehicle for everyone. The child volunteer who had the line created by the child curry amulet saw the event and worshiped weekly. Lord of this carnival Hosted in the month of Chittirai, on the star of Barani. Therefore, this is the place to worship on Barani Star Day. The temple has puja both in the morning and in the evening.
