Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami involves preparing delicious offerings (bhog) for Lord Krishna. Here are some divine recipes that can elevate your bhog for this auspicious occasion:

1. Maakhan Mishri (Butter and Sugar Candy)

Ingredients:

  • Fresh butter (makhan) – 1 cup
  • Sugar (mishri) – ½ cup (crushed)
  • Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
  • Chopped nuts (cashews, almonds) – optional

Instructions:

  1. Whip the butter until it’s smooth and creamy.
  2. Add crushed sugar and cardamom powder, mixing well.
  3. Optionally, fold in chopped nuts for added texture.
  4. Serve in a small bowl decorated with nuts on top.

2. Peda (Sweet Milk Fudge)

Ingredients:

  • Milk powder – 2 cups
  • Condensed milk – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 2 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder – ½ tsp
  • Chopped nuts (pistachios, almonds) – for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, heat ghee and add milk powder. Stir on low heat until lightly golden.
  2. Add condensed milk and cardamom powder. Mix until it forms a dough-like consistency.
  3. Allow to cool slightly, then shape into small round pedas.
  4. Garnish with chopped nuts.

3. Kheer (Rice Pudding)

Ingredients:

  • Rice – ½ cup
  • Milk – 1 liter
  • Sugar – ½ cup
  • Cardamom – 2 pods (crushed)
  • Chopped nuts and raisins – for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse and soak rice for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pot, boil milk and add the soaked rice.
  3. Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally until rice is soft and the mixture thickens.
  4. Add sugar and crushed cardamom. Cook for another 5-10 minutes.
  5. Garnish with nuts and raisins before serving.

4. Kadi (Spiced Yogurt Curry)

Ingredients:

  • Yogurt – 1 cup
  • Besan (gram flour) – 2 tbsp
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – a few
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp

Instructions:

  1. Whisk yogurt and besan together with water, turmeric, and salt until smooth.
  2. In a pot, heat ghee and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  3. Pour in the yogurt mixture and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.
  4. Serve hot with rice.

5. Fruit Chaat (Mixed Fruit Salad)

Ingredients:

  • Assorted fruits (banana, apple, pomegranate, grapes) – chopped
  • Lemon juice – 1 tbsp
  • Chaat masala – ½ tsp
  • Honey – 1 tbsp (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine chopped fruits.
  2. Drizzle with lemon juice and sprinkle chaat masala.
  3. Add honey if desired and mix well before serving.
