Special Features

The Ananda Prabhu Kuti Vihara is considered the largest monastery in the Dakshin Kosala region and holds significant national importance, having been declared as such under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. Sirpur serves as a revered pilgrimage site for followers of Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. This remarkable vihara was unearthed during excavations in the year 2003. It is oriented to the west and comprises a sanctum, a pillared Mandapam (ceremonial hall), and an Ardha Mandapam (half hall). The pillared mandapa features corridors on all sides, with a small central tank intended for ablution.

Within the sanctum, you’ll find a sizable idol of Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, placed on a beautifully adorned pedestal. This Buddha statue is accompanied by two female devotees, one on each side. The temple’s doorways are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Buddha’s life and Panchatantra stories, such as the friendship between a crocodile and a monkey, a snake capturing a frog, a bison fight, interactions among honey bees, birds, and various animal figures. Along the northern and southern sides, there are small cells with openings to the corridor, likely used for residential purposes. This vihara’s historical and cultural significance adds to the rich tapestry of Sirpur’s heritage.
