Introduction

Pancha Lingeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kondapuram Village near Kaveripakkam Town in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is famous for five Lingams housed in separate shrines.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Kaveripakkam Bus Stand, 3 Kms from Thiruparkadal, 18 Kms from Walajah Railway Station, and 90 Kms from Chennai Airport. The temple is located right on the Chennai – Bangalore highway at about 1 Km after Murugan Idly shop near Kaveripakkam.

Puranic Significance 

The original temple was reconstructed in the recent years. The mandapa around the sannadhis are the mixture of Chozha, Pallava and Vijayanagara pillars. Some pillars Capital/ pothyals looks like Pallava period. There are no inscriptions found in the temple adhisthana, but we had seen a fragment inscription stone near the well which belongs to Chozha period 11th to 12th Century.

   As per the Rajagopuram recent period inscription speaks about the legend associated with the temple. This place Kondapuram is a part of Kaveripakkam also called as Saiva Puram on the banks of river Palima was called as “Thiruveni Chaturvedi Mangalam” in ancient times.  

As per the legend, Kamakshi Ambal made Pancha lingams representing the Pancha Boodhas and the five faces of Lord Shiva, worshipped them here before starting her severe penance near Kamba River.

This is a small, ancient and beautiful temple with three tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple has five shrines each having one Shiva Linga. Apart from that, there are two shrines enshrining Kamakshi idol. There is also a shrine for Ganesha and another for Lord Murugan with Valli and Devasena. The walls of the temple have the niche images of two Dakshina Murti, Vishnu, and Brahma. Navagraha is also found in this temple. The Temple has been renovated by Industrialist Birla family. Kanchi Maha Swamigal intended to stay here permanently at one point of time. There is an adjacent Kanchi Maha Swamigal Mandapam where he stayed for quite some time. This place is considered very sacred and ideal for meditation.

Beliefs

People can light 27 ghee lamps in the shrine that corresponds to their Rasi to get relieved from planetary problems.

Special Features

The sanctum sanctorum complex consists of  5 Linga sannidhis  for Prithvi – Earth, Appu – Water, Agni – Fire, Vayu – Air and Agaya – Space  are installed in a separate sannadhis.  Agaya – Space (Chidambaram) Linga was considered as the main sanctum with Palipedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam. This sannadhi is facing east. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai are in the main sanctum devakoshtam. Temple pond is on the south side of the temple complex. In addition to this there are sannadhis  for Two Kamakshi Ambals, Natarajar, Ganapathy, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar and Navagrahas.
