Historical Significance – Chola Dynasty:

  • This temple is believed to be over 1,500 years old and is a masterpiece of South Indian architecture.
  • The Chola dynasty, known for its contributions to art and architecture, commissioned the construction of the temple. An epigraph from the reign of Rajaraja mentions grants to the temple and records the construction of a mandapa by Rajendra Chola I.

Renovation by Vijayanagara Kings:

  • In the 15th century, the Kolaramma Temple underwent significant renovation, thanks to the patronage of the Vijayanagara Kings.

Royal Patronage from Mysore:

  • The temple also held importance for the royal family of Mysore, who frequented the temple to seek blessings from Goddess Kolaramma. This historical temple has been a focal point of devotion and patronage for centuries.

  • The temple features various inscriptions in Tamil characters on the garbhagriha, adhisthana mouldings, and pilastered walls.
  • The east-facing entrance, known as the Mahadwara, is beautifully decorated and features a Gajalakshmi motif in green stone on the lintel. Inside, the pillars are adorned with sculptured figures on all sides.
