Description
The “Thiru-vilakku” or “Kuthu-vilakku” is a meticulously crafted lamp, also known as “Deepa” in Sanskrit. It holds a special place within the shrines of South Indian households and symbolizes Mahalakshmi, the deity associated with Fortune and Prosperity. The Thiruvilakku Pooja is a collective worship ceremony, typically involving a large gathering of women, aimed at venerating Mahalakshmi. This ritual is believed to bring prosperity to the home and contribute to global peace.
The primary focus of Thiruvilakku Pooja is the well-being of the woman’s family. It is believed to usher in auspicious blessings for every member of the household. As soon as the lamp is lit, it is said that Sai Mahalakshmi graces the home and fulfills the deepest desires of the heart, making it a cherished and spiritually significant tradition in South Indian culture.
Lighting lamps in specific numbers, such as 108 or 1008, on Fridays and auspicious days like full moon (Pournami) or new moon (Amavasai) days in temples is considered highly auspicious and is believed to yield significant benefits for the worshipper, akin to the merits of performing a yagna (ritualistic fire ceremony).
The benefits of conducting lamp pooja on full moon or amavasai days in each Tamil month are as follows:
- Chithirai Pournami/Amavasai: Provides an abundance of all types of food grains.
- Vaigasi Pournami/Amavasai: Attracts wealth and financial prosperity.
- Aani Pournami/Amavasai: Removes obstacles in marriage and promotes marital harmony.
- Aadi Pournami/Amavasai: Extends one’s lifespan and well-being.
- Aavani Pournami/Amavasai: Blesses with the gift of children.
- Purataasi Pournami/Amavasai: Increases the number of cows in the household.
- Aippasi Pournami/Amavasai: Helps in healing and removing diseases.
- Karthigai Pournami/Amavasai: Leads to spiritual liberation (mukthi).
- Margali Pournami/Amavasai: Promotes good health and well-being.
- Thai Pournami/Amavasai: Grants victory and success.
- Maasi Pournami/Amavasai: Relieves sorrows and brings solace.
- Panguni Pournami/Amavasai: Encourages contemplation on the path of dharma (righteousness).
These lamp poojas are a form of devotional practice in Hinduism, and they are believed to invoke the blessings of deities, particularly Goddess Lakshmi (associated with wealth and prosperity) and other divine forces. Devotees conduct these rituals with faith and devotion to seek the specified benefits in their lives.
