Ayyappa Puja holds great significance. Ayyappan, also known as Dharmasasta, Maṇikanṭhan, or Sasta, is the offspring of Harihara, representing a fusion of both Shiva and Vishnu. Lord Ayyappan is considered an incarnation of Lord Sree Dharma Sastha and is venerated by people from various backgrounds, with a particular following among the Pandya Royal Community. It is believed that Lord Ayyappa embodies the essence of Sri Dharma Sastha. Lord Vishnu bestowed the newborn deity with a precious bell necklace, earning him the name Manikantha. Description

  1. Sabarimala Pilgrimage: The Ayyappa Pooja is closely linked to the annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala, a temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The pilgrimage season typically takes place during the winter months, and millions of devotees visit the temple during this time.
  2. Vratham (Austerities): Before undertaking the pilgrimage to Sabarimala, devotees observe a 41-day period of fasting and austerities. This period is known as “Mandala Vratham” and is intended to purify the body and mind.
  3. Irumudi Kettu: One of the most significant aspects of the Ayyappa Pooja is the preparation of the “Irumudi Kettu.” This is a two-compartment bag or cloth bundle that contains offerings for Lord Ayyappa, including ghee, coconut, camphor, incense, and other items. Devotees carry the Irumudi Kettu on their heads during the pilgrimage.
  4. Austerities and Dress Code: Devotees wear simple traditional attire, which includes wearing a black dhoti. They abstain from consuming alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and maintain celibacy during the pilgrimage.
  5. Pooja and Rituals: At Sabarimala and other Ayyappa temples, devotees offer prayers and perform rituals like the Neyyabhishekam (offering of ghee to the deity). The main temple at Sabarimala opens only on specific days and during the annual pilgrimage season.
  6. Sabarimala Pilgrimage: The pilgrimage culminates in the darshan (viewing) of the deity at Sabarimala. Devotees trek through dense forests to reach the temple. The pilgrimage is physically demanding and spiritually fulfilling.
  7. Devotee Diversity: A unique aspect of Ayyappa Pooja is the inclusivity it encourages. Devotees of all backgrounds, regardless of caste or religion, are welcome to participate in the rituals.

Ayyappa Pooja is a deeply spiritual and personal experience for devotees who undertake the pilgrimage and observe the associated austerities. It is a way to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa and experience spiritual growth. However, it’s important to note that participation in Ayyappa Pooja and the Sabarimala pilgrimage has specific customs, rules, and regulations that should be followed, and it is recommended to consult with knowledgeable individuals or priests if you plan to undertake this spiritual journey.
