Description

Avani Avittam, also known as Upakramam, signifies “the beginning or commencement” and holds great importance in the Vedic tradition. It is a significant ritual, particularly for Brahmins, as it involves the annual changing of their sacred “Poonal” or white thread. This ceremony is performed to purify the thread, removing any associated “Doshas” (impurities) or “Theetu” (ritual impurities).

The term “Avani” refers to the Tamil month, while “Avittam” is one of the 27 Nakshatras (lunar constellations). During Avani Avittam, Brahmins renew their commitment to the study of the Vedas and engage in prayers and rituals to seek divine blessings and atonement for any sins or impurities accumulated over the past year.

It is considered a mandatory and essential practice for all Brahmins to perform this ritual without fail. Avani Avittam serves as an opportunity for self-purification and spiritual renewal, allowing individuals to start their Vedic studies with a clean slate and a purified white thread. By doing so, they seek to uphold the sacred traditions of their heritage and maintain their spiritual connection with the Vedas and the divine.
