Description

The legend of Varaha Jayanti originates from the Puranas, wherein Diti, one of the wives of Rishi Kashyapa, gave birth to two powerful demons, Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, along with the evil demoness Holika. Both Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, driven by adharma, pleased Lord Brahma with their unwavering devotion and prayers, seeking invincibility in all realms.

Granted their wish by Lord Brahma, the brothers wreaked havoc across the three worlds, prompting Lord Varuna to warn them of Lord Vishnu’s protection. Ignoring the warning, Hiranyaksha sought to confront Lord Vishnu, who had incarnated as Lord Varaha, lifting the earth on his tusks. In a fierce battle, Lord Varaha defeated Hiranyaksha, putting an end to his reign of terror.

Since then, Varaha Jayanti is celebrated to honor Lord Varaha’s third incarnation as a wild boar. People observe fasts and worship Lord Varaha, seeking protection from evil and embracing a righteous life of service to others.

Notable temples where Varaha Jayanti is revered include the ancient temple in Mathura and the Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple in Tirumala, where devotees offer coconut water, milk, honey, butter, and ghee to the idol of Lord Varaha or Lord Vishnu during the festival.
