Prayagraj is a sacred place where the act of Asthi Visarjan holds great significance. This process involves immersing the asthis, which consist of the remaining bones or collected ashes of the deceased, in the purifying waters of this holy city. Following the completion of the final rites for the departed soul, these remnants are usually enclosed in a piece of cloth. Subsequently, the immersed ashes gracefully flow in the serene waters, akin to a peaceful river. This entire ritual is referred to as “Asthi Visarjan.”

Performing Asthi Visarjan is not only a customary practice but also a spiritual necessity. It is of paramount importance to follow the prescribed procedures as outlined in our scriptures to ensure that the soul of the departed finds solace and fulfillment. Failing to adhere to these sacred guidelines can cause distress to the departed soul. It is advisable to collect the asthis either on the day of the cremation or on the 3rd, 7th, or 9th day after the final rites. If for any reason the immersion is delayed beyond the 10th day, it should be performed only after the tirtha-shraddha ritual has been duly conducted.
