Introduction

Kalabhairava Temple is located in the Vairavankovil town, Thanjavur district, Tamilnadu. It is said that there is no deity equal to Kalabhairava in giving success to the devotees. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.

Puranic Significance

Bhairavar sat southwards on the north bank of the Kaveri at the Vairavan Kovil by order of Easan. There is also a cemetery in the area towards him. This is a site of equal pride to Kasi. Here is the place where Easen, who consecrated Bhairavar, stayed, and that is called as Easengudi. Legend has it that the goddess stood at Umayal Puram, Nandi Madha and Ganga Gangapuram and worshiped Bhairav. The Bhairava worships that take place on every Theiperai Ashtami day are special in this place. All the necessities will be fulfilled if you attend this puja which is held from 7 pm till midnight; Hope all the barriers are broken.
