- Temple complex houses both Lord Rama and Goddess Kali.
Age & Significance:
- Believed to be over 1000 years old.
- The name Ajaya means “invincible,” a title given to both Lord Rama and Goddess Kali at this temple.
Puranic Significance:
- Based on the Ramayana legend where Lord Rama prayed to Goddess Kali for strength to defeat Ravana.
- Goddess Kali blessed Rama with an invincible arrow, leading to Ravana’s defeat and Sita’s rescue.
- The temple represents Kali as a combination of Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.
- After the battle, Rama placed his family (Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman) before Kali in gratitude.
Beliefs & Rituals:
- Turmeric Milk: Used to anoint Goddess Ajayakali, believed to remove marriage obstacles and bring good luck.
- Jayamadurashtaka: Devotees who recite this hymn in the temple’s Maha Mandapam are believed to achieve success.
Special Features:
- Story of the Devotee: A woman from Brahmadesa near Andhiyur was warned by Goddess Ajayakali in a dream about heavy rain, which later occurred, demonstrating the goddess’s divine powers.
- Only flowers from the temple garden (Nandavan) are accepted for worship; no outside flowers or fruits.
- A six-foot high statue of Narayana Perumal is located outside the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Rama.
- Nine Navagraha pillars set up in water for worship, similar to the Rameswaram tradition.
