Introduction

Location:

• Situated at Sathiram in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu.
• The temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, known as Goddess Kamakshi Amman.

Historical Significance:

• The temple is almost 1000 years old.
• Goddess Kamakshi Amman is the presiding deity of the temple.

Puranic Significance:

• Legend of the Temple:
  • A woman from Nallinam Village went to Kalayarkoil with her son and obtained a deity of Goddess Kamakshi Amman.
  • The boy, blessed by Goddess Kamakshi, played music on a toy called Udukku. The music pleased the Goddess, and she blessed the family, fulfilling all their wishes.
  • The boy later helped King Kalayarkoil’s wife, who was severely ill. The boy explained the disease and cure, and the King thanked him by freeing the soothsayers and constructing the temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi.

Beliefs:

• Child boon: Devotees pray here for blessings related to children.
• Offerings: Devotees perform abishekam (ritual bathing of the deity) and offer vastras (clothes) to the Goddess.

Special Features:

• Shivarathri: Although the temple is dedicated to Shakti, Shivarathri is celebrated with grandeur, highlighting the philosophy that Shakti is an indispensable component of Shiva.
• 64 Parivara Devadas: Goddess Kamakshi is worshipped along with 64 assistant deities (Parivara Devatas), emphasizing the unity between Shiva and Shakti.
• The temple teaches that Shakti represents the Mercy Part of Lord Shiva, signifying that they are one.

Festivals:

• Mahashivarathri: Celebrated with great importance despite being a Shakti Temple.
• Special poojas are conducted on every Full Moon (Poornima) day.
• Processions: Devotees carry milk pots and Kavadis during festival days in a procession.
