Introduction

Bhuleshwar is a Shiva temple, situated around 45 kilometres from Pune and 10 km from Pune Solapur highway from Yawat in Maharashtra, India. The temple is situated on a hill and was built in the 8th century. There are classical carvings on the walls. It has been declared as a protected monument and is maintained by Archeological Survey of India.. The temple is also known for the folk-tale about it, when a bowl of sweet (pedhas) is offered to the Shiva Ling, one or more of the sweets disappear. The temple also has an idol of Ganesha in female attire. It is popular as Ganeshwari or Lambodari or Ganeshyani. This temple is said to have been built in the 12thcentury by King Krishnadevaraya.

Beliefs

This temple gets huge crowds during Mahashivratri. There is a local belief, when a bowl of sweet is offered to Lord Shiva, one or more of the sweets disappear.

Special Features

The fort on which the temple is situated is called as Daulatmangal fort sometimes referred as Mangalgad. Black basalt (`AA type’) rock was brought to construct this temple it is far superior as compared to surrounding brownish color basalt which has high percentage of calcium (lime – Chuna). The temple has mythological significance as it is said that this was the spot where Goddess Parvati used to dance for Lord Shiva before they left for Kailash to get married.

Festivals

The temple is decorated during Mahashivratri and the celebrations are grand. There are poojas and rituals conducted and it is during this time the temple is most crowded. Even during Shravan, the temple attracts a lot of crowd as the festival of Hindola is celebrated.
