Introduction

Varada Anjaneyar Temple is dedicated to God Hanuman located at Pernamallur in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. Pernamallur is one of the important places of Pallava and early Cholas on Thondaimandalam. The chola kings used to stay here for rest while they travel to Pazhaiyarai, so this became the head for all around the villages. It is mainly dominated and administrated by Samburayar kings in the past.

Puranic Significance

Swayambu Anjaneya: A farmer couple living in this beautiful and natural environment was sad as they had no child for years after marriage. While ploughing his land, the farmer’s plough stuck at a point and he could not move it further. Digging the place, he found an idol of Sri Anjaneya. The installed the idol with the help of the villagers and began worshipping him. They were gifted with a child next year. The popularity of Sri Anjaneya began to spread and a full-fledged temple came into being. War between two Kings: The name of the place derives from the story that two kings fought against the other in this place. Since war happened between two groups of soldiers at this place, this town got name as “pe-rani-mallur” then it became “pe-ra-ni-nallur” and now it called as “per-na-mallur”. The name due to the presence of Dam: Some believe that the name Peranamallur got derived from the Dam built across Panaiyaar River.

Beliefs

Mental courage, relief from the adverse aspects of planet Sani Bhagwan, wedding, child, reunion of couples separated for some reasons or other, relief from illness and health are the prayers of the devotees to Sri Anjaneya. Devotees offer Vadamalai – garland made of Vadas a popular dish of Tamilnadu – perform abishek and aaradhanas to Sri Anjaneya. The temple enjoys an equal reputation of Girivalam – circumambulating the hill – as in Thiruvannamalai, which devotees feel very important for their wellbeing. Devotees believe that Girivalam would bring them all peace and auspiciousness in life.

The temple is situated in a pleasant environment surrounded by hills and green fields. Girivalam is the main prayer commitment of the devotees. The temple is on a small hill. The Temple is believed to be more than 1500 years old. Devotees worship Sri Varada Anjaneya by circumambulating – Girivalam – the hill. Valargiri Velmurugan Temple (built on the side of Pernamallur big lake and on the big rock (Valargiri), from where one can see the nature view of lake and (an oval-shaped rock standing on another sliding rock).

Festivals

The temple celebrates Hanuman Jayanthi in a grand manner.
