Puranic Significance

Etymology:

In Olden days, this place was Pirambu forest; hence this place is called as Perambur. Also, Brahma asked Upadesam from Murugan, hence this place is also called as Brahma Mangalapuram.

Gnana Guru:

Lord Muruga killed Soorapadman to relieve the devas and sages from his harassment. Lord Muruga made Soorapadman to become Cock and Peacock. Soorapadman in the form of Cock and Peacock asked Murugan to give Gnana Upadesam. Hence Murugan gave Gnana Upadesam to Peacock and Brahma, here Murugan is considered as Gnana Guru.

The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. The Temple is facing east with five tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple has two prakarams, Arthamandapam and Mahamandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Jambunathar / Jambukeswarar / Brahmapuriswarar. Mother is Akilandeswari / Ananthavalli. In most of the Murugan Temple, Peacock head will be turned to right side. Here it is turned to left side is the specialty here.

Lord Murugan is housed in a separate Sanctum. Lord Muruga with his consort Valli and Deivanai graces here with 12 arms and sitting on peacock. Valli is housed in a separate Shrine facing south. Chandikeswarar is in the form of Guha Chandikeswarar. Dhakshinamoorthi is in the form of Guha Dhakshinamoorthi. A peacock is seen at his feet instead of the usual Muyalagan. Guha Dhakshinamoorthy and Durga are the Koshta Idols around the sanctum of Lord Muruga. Shrines for Vinayaga and Idumban are located at the entrance of the Temple. Shrines for Adhi Vinayagar, Mahalakshmi, Gangai Amman, Athi Devasena, Brahmapureeswarar and Ananthavalli are located in the prakaram. Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingodhbava, Brahma, Chandikeswarar are the Koshta Idols surrounding sanctum walls of Brahmapureeswarar Shrine. Idol of Milagu Chettiyar who has done lot of renovations to this temple is kept near Nandhi. Special Poojas are conducted to this idol during Thiruvathirai Day. Normally in Shiva temples, Murugan Shrine is located behind the Shiva Shrine in northwest direction. But in this temple as Muruga is considered as Guru, Lord Shiva Shrine is located behind Lord Muruga Shrine in the north-west direction.
