Introduction

Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nandi village, at the top of Nandi Hills in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state, India. T Nandi Hills is also called as Anandagiri during ancient times.

Puranic Significance

The temple is believed to be built by Cholas.The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old

As per legend, Nandi, the revered vehicle of Lord Shiva, is said to have undertaken penance at this sacred site. Consequently, the Lord came to be known as Yoga Nandeeshwara. This temple is prominently located atop the picturesque Nandi Hills. The temple is positioned facing east, and its entrance is graced by an arch characterized by four pillars and four pilasters. Within the sanctum, one can find the deity Yoga Nandeeshwara, and this sacred space is protected by beautifully crafted dvarapalas, guardian deities who stand watch over the entrance. Flanking these dvarapalas are depictions of Lord Ganesha and Rishabaruda.

The pillars within the temple are adorned with intricate sculptures, showcasing the rich artistic heritage of the region. Within the temple premises, there are shrines dedicated to Subramanya Swamy, Vinayaga (Ganesha), Parvathy, and Nagas (serpent deities). Additionally, you can discover various idols from the Chola era scattered throughout the temple premises, adding historical and cultural significance to the site. A noteworthy feature of the temple premises is the presence of a pond. This pond serves as a rainwater harvesting system and was historically the primary source of water at the hilltop, highlighting the practical and sustainable aspects of the temple’s design and architecture.
