Introduction

Hooli Tarakeshwara Shiva Temple is located in the Hooli village, in the Belgaum district in North Karnataka. Hooli is one of the oldest villages in Belgaum. Tarakeshwara shiva temple, situated on the slopes of the hillock, fifteen minute walk from Pachalingeshwara temple.

Puranic Significance

The temple was constructed during the heyday of the Ratta dynasty in the 12th century. Hooli boasts several other ancient temples, although sadly, many of them now lie in ruins due to neglect and lack of proper maintenance. The sculptures and carvings on the stones within these temples are truly remarkable and serve as a testament to the rich artistic and architectural heritage of the region.

Unfortunately, the neglect of these temples has led to some of them being targeted by treasure hunters who have dug up their floors in search of hidden valuables. This unfortunate activity has resulted in the loss and theft of valuable historical and cultural artifacts. It underscores the importance of preserving and protecting these invaluable heritage sites for future generations.

Special Features

The Tarakeshwara temple is located in an elevated area and is characterized by its design and the presence of numerous Bilva Patri trees in the front yard. Unfortunately, the temple is in a poor and heavily ruined state. There are two side entrances to the temple, and several parts of the roof and canopy are missing. On the southern side, it appears that the construction of the side wall may be incomplete. This architectural style is reminiscent of the Badami Chalukyan era.

On the northern side of the temple, the outer stone covering has deteriorated or been removed, revealing the inner structure. Despite its damaged condition, the temple structure still stands. Near the temple, there are three pillars, and a fourth unseen pillar forms a Natyamantapa or Rangamantapa, likely an area for performances or rituals. These pillars differ from the outer pillars. Notably, this temple is unique in the Hooli village as it is surrounded by Bilva Patri trees, which adds to its distinct character and ambiance within the village.
