Introduction

Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva located in Gatora Village in Masturi Tehsil in Bilaspur District in the Indian state of Chattisgarh.

Puranic Significance

The temple was believed to be built in 14th – 15th century CE.

Special Features

This temple consists of a sanctum and a pillared open mandapa. The sanctum is designed in a saptaratha plan, which means it has seven projections or divisions at the back. The superstructure (shikara) over the sanctum follows the rekha nagara architectural style, characterized by its curved and tapering tower. Unlike some temples with elaborate exterior decorations, this temple’s exterior walls are devoid of any ornate carvings or adornments. However, the lower portion of the shikara features niches on all sides. Below these niches, you can find sculptures of human figurines in dancing postures, encircling the shikara. These dancing figures add artistic and cultural significance to the temple’s design. Situated on the banks of a large pond in the village, this temple has been designated as one of the protected monuments in Chhattisgarh by the Archaeological Survey of India, highlighting its historical and architectural value in the region.
