Introduction

The Kottai Amman Temple, located in Devakottai town, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu, holds a significant place in the region and is known for its powerful presiding deity, Kottai Amman.

The Kottai Amman Temple is situated in Devakottai town, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. Devakottai is located approximately 20 kilometers from Karaikudi.
The temple is situated on Oorani Street and is accessible via the Tiruchirappalli-Rameswaram National Highway Road (NH-210).
The nearest airport to Devakottai is in Madurai, which is approximately 92 kilometers away. The nearest railway station is ‘Devakottai Road.’

Puranic Significance

The temple is dedicated to Kottai Amman and is considered one of the most powerful temples in the Devakottai area.
It belongs to the 40 sections and 130 pullis of Devakottai Nagarathars, with five trustees on board, each serving a two-year term. A group becomes a trustee of the temple once every 16 years.
The annual festival of the temple lasts for 15 days, usually celebrated from July 18th to August 1st. During the rest of the year, devotees offer worship through a grill.
The temple structure is simple, with a front mandapam featuring a Mangalore tile roof. In the sanctum, there is no moortham (idol) but a platform. During festivals, a kumbh (pot) with coconut is placed on the platform and adorned as Amman.

Worship is conducted for the kumbh decorated like Amman during the festival, and Abhishekam is performed twice daily to the Balipeedam installed in the mandapam.
The Abhishekam includes offerings such as Thiraviyam, milk, curd, honey, cut fruits, Panchamirtham, sandalwood paste, turmeric paste, tender coconut water, paneer, lemon, and more. It is said that about 300 to 400 liters of milk are used for the Abhishekam.
Devotees from Devakottai Nagarathars and other places attend the annual festival and offer prayers for various wishes, including relief from diseases, property acquisition, obtaining visas for foreign countries, employment, marriages, and children, among other requests.
After their wishes are fulfilled, people offer Pongal, sugar cane cradles (for carrying children), Ma Vilakku, and other items to the deity.

Historical Perspective:

The Kottai Amman Temple is believed to be approximately 1,000 years old, and it has been a center of devotion and worship in the region for centuries.

people pray for all like, diseases, buying property, getting visa for foreign countries, employment, getting marriage, Child, etc. After wishes are fulfilled, people used to offer to Amman, like Pongal, Sugar cane cradle (Children will be carried through this cradle), Ma Vilakku etc.
