Rameshwaram holds great sanctity as one of the Chardhams, and it is a sacred place where the ashes or asthis of departed souls are immersed in the holy Agniteertham or near Dhanushkodi. This act of offering the remains in the sacred waters is believed to facilitate the soul’s liberation from the cycle of rebirth, ultimately leading to peace. Asthi Visarjan at Rameshwaram carries immense religious significance.

The term “Asthi” refers to the residual bone fragments or ashes of deceased individuals. After the completion of the final rites, these remains are typically gathered and often placed within a piece of cloth. Eventually, the ashes are immersed, allowing them to flow gently in the serene waters, resembling a river. This entire process of immersion is known as “Asthi visarjan.”
