Introduction
According to legend, the Saraboji kings of Thanjavur sought to establish a temple in Madurai and chose a serene spot on the banks of the Vaigai River. To consecrate the temple, they brought an idol of Lord Anjaneya from Andhra Pradesh, installed it with great reverence, and began worshipping it.
This sacred temple, located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River, is believed to possess a divine safeguard—even during major floods, the river waters are said to reach only up to the temple entrance, never crossing its threshold.
The temple complex also houses separate shrines for Lord Shiva, Lord Vinayagar, Lord Nagar, and Lord Pandi Muniswamy. A unique offering at this temple is curd rice, which is presented with devotion. Notably, the idol of Lord Anjaneya here faces south, a distinctive feature that holds special significance in Hindu tradition.
Beliefs
Devotees believe that sincere prayers to Lord Anjaneya at this temple can bring swift relief from issues related to marriage, infertility, and stomach ailments. Worshipping here is also said to bestow physical strength, dispel fear, and enhance intelligence. Additionally, it is believed that seeking Lord Anjaneya’s blessings at this sacred site helps in overcoming illnesses and attaining success and fame in life.
