Introduction

Raja Durga Temple is located in Tirumanjana Street in Thiruvarur Town in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. The popular belief is that those people born in Hasta star get all sorts of relief after visiting this temple. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Chitra Poornima in April-May; the temple is located in the Tirumanjana Street, very close to the Thyagaraja temple.

Puranic Significance

Mother Raja Durga represents the glory of Lords Brahmma, Vishnu and Shiva and the three powers called Icha, Kriya and Gnana. She also represents the essence of Vedas, Agamas and Puranas. Mother Jaya Durga granting all success to her devotees in all endeavors and at all times, is in this temple praised as Raja Durga.

Beliefs

The popular belief is that those people born in Hast Nakshatra get all sort of relief after visiting the Raja Durga Temple. The belief is that Rahu resides inside the Murti of Goddess Durga. People pray to Mother Raja Durga for relief from various obstacles faced by them and for prosperity. People belonging to the above stars and zodiac signs perform abishek and archanas with red flower garlands, offer saris and light lamps with cow ghee. Mother Raja Durga is the fortune giver to those born of Pooram, Uthiram, Hastham, Chithirai, Magam Stars and belonging to Rishaba, Simha, kanya, Tula, Makara and Kumba signs of the zodiac circle.

Special Features

Mother Durga traditionally placed on the north prakara in temples, is the presiding deity of this temple in the sanctum sanctorum in a sitting posture on her Lion Vahana with a merciful face, facing east. Mother Raja Durga is holding conch, discus, sword and trident in her four hands and wearing the crescent moon on the head. The belief is that Rahu resides inside the Murti of Goddess Durga. Mahakavi Kalidasa in his celebrated epic Raghuvamsam says that Lord Sri Rama worshipped Mother Raja Durga before his march on Lanka to rescue Mother Sita. Fridays in the Aadi month are highly auspicious.

Festivals

The temple celebrates all Fridays in the month of Tamil Aadi – July-August with special pujas.
