Introduction

  • Location: Thiruthetriyambalam (also known as **Palli Konda Perumal Temple), located in Thirunangur, a village on the outskirts of Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • Deity: Vishnu, worshipped as Palli Konda Perumal.
  • Significance:
    • One of the 108 Divyadesams dedicated to Vishnu.
    • Constructed in Dravidian architectural style.
    • Glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints (6th–9th centuries AD).
    • One of the eleven Divyadesams of Thirunangur and is associated with Thirumangai Azhwar, though it is also revered by another Azhwar.

Puranic Significance

  • The Legend of Shiva’s Dance:
    • All eleven temples of Thirunangur are linked through a common legend. After the death of Uma (Shiva’s consort) due to Daksha’s yagna (sacrifice), Shiva began a furious dance.
    • Each time his lock of hair touched the ground, another form of Shiva emerged, leading to fears of the destruction of the world.
    • The celestial deities prayed to Vishnu for help, and Vishnu appeared, calming Shiva’s fury.
    • Shiva requested Vishnu to appear in eleven forms like he did, leading to Vishnu’s manifestation in eleven forms at Thirunangur.
  • Arjuna’s Connection with Krishna:
    • The temple is also associated with Arjuna, who is said to have dug the temple tank using the sword Krishna gave him.
    • Krishna appeared as Parthasarathy (Arjuna’s charioteer) and initiated Arjuna’s education at this site, hence the temple’s name, Palli Konda Perumal.

Beliefs

  • It is believed that devotees who pray earnestly at the temple are elevated by the grace of Perumal to royal positions, with their prayers for such advancements being immediately answered by the Lord.
  • Devotees often perform archanas to Perumal with Tulsi leaves, offering Sarkarai Pongal (sweet pudding) as nivedhana (offering).

Special Features

  • Arrival of Srirangam Ranganathar:
    • It is believed that the presiding deity of Srirangam, Ranganathar, arrived here at the request of Shiva.
    • The temple is also referred to as Ambalam (meaning temple in Malayalam).
  • Varaha Avatar of Vishnu:
    • The legend of Vishnu’s Varaha Avatar (as a boar) is associated with the temple. Hiranyakshan, the demon, took the earth and hid it in Padala Loka (the underworld).
    • Vishnu, in his Varaha form, rescued the earth and restored it to its rightful place, after which he came to Palasavanam (the current location) to grant his darshan to Mother Mahalakshmi and Lord Shiva.
    • It is said that Vishnu relaxed here after the battle, half-closing his handsome red eyes, earning the temple’s praise as Senganmal Ranganathar (the Lord with red eyes).
