Puranic Significance
- Two demons, Madhu and Kaidapar, tried to abduct Sri Devi and Bhoodevi while Lord Vishnu rested on Adhiseshan (serpent bed).
- Sri Devi hid in the bosom of Vishnu, while Bhoodevi sought refuge under His lotus feet.
- Adhiseshan spat venom to repel the demons but feared acting without Vishnu’s permission.
- Lord Vishnu reassured Adhiseshan that his actions were righteous. As a symbol of this event, Adhiseshan appears with a shrunk head in the temple.

- The adjacent sanctum houses a Mahavishnu sculpture in sleeping position (Ari Thuyil), symbolizing awareness while resting.
- This reclining posture of Mahavishnu is one of the largest examples found in temples.
