Puranic Significance:
- The temple is associated with the divine wedding of Lord Vishnu and Mother Mahalakshmi.
- After the churning of the milk ocean, Mahalakshmi, enticed by Vishnu’s appearance, performed penance here to marry Him.
- Lord Vishnu granted darshan and the wedding took place with divine pomp, in the presence of 90 crore Devas.
- The place is also called Lakshmi Vanam (as Mahalakshmi performed penance here) and Krishna Mangala Kshetra (where the divine wedding occurred).
- Vishnu is praised as Perum Pura Kadal, which means the “Ocean Lord,” as He emerged from the milk ocean.
Beliefs:
- Garuda Bhagwan: The vehicle of Lord Vishnu is enshrined in the temple and is colossal in size.
- Devotees seek blessings for the removal of obstacles in wedding proposals, child boon, and job opportunities by praying to Garuda.

- Rajagopuram: 90 ft (27 m) tall five-tiered gateway tower.
- Temple Tank: One of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, situated opposite the temple.
- Saptamrita Kshetram: The temple is referred to as this, meaning “Seven Celebrated Elements of Nature,” including Vimanam, Mandapam, Aaranyam, Theertham, Kshetram, river, and town.
- Temple Layout:
- Main entrance faces East, with a four-pillared open hall.
- Smaller temple tower on the western side.
- Large streets surrounding the temple for the chariot festival procession.
