Puranic Significance
- The Thethi Agneeswarar Temple is believed to be around 500 years old.
- According to legend, Lord Agneeswarar is associated with the deity Agni, who was cursed for participating in a Yagya against Lord Shiva, which caused Agni’s power to diminish. In his remorse, Agni is said to have worshiped Lord Shiva by setting up lingams in many places, including this temple.
- Sanctum: The east-facing sanctum is preceded by a conical front hall.
- Lord’s Sanctum: The Lord’s sanctum faces south. At the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum, a small idol of Lord Ganesha is placed.
Temple Features
- There are shrines located on both sides of the sanctum:
- On the right is a shrine for Murugan, accompanied by Vallitheivanai.
- In the north-east, a small hall houses the idols of Shani Bhairava.
- A separate temple, likely a newer addition, is situated towards the south of the main temple.
- Puja Schedule: The temple performs pujas twice daily, in the morning and evening.
Inscription
- An inscription found on the gate of the Rajagopuram mentions that the gopuram was constructed before the year 1907. In this inscription, the village is referred to as Thethi.
