Introduction
The Vaikuntanatha Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located at Therani village in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Puranic Significance
- The Vaikuntanatha Temple was constructed in the 16th century on the banks of the Kushasthali River.
- The local rulers, upon request, had the temple built with the permission of the mighty Vijayanagara Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, who was in control of the region at the time.
- Over time, the temple fell into a state of disrepair, primarily due to the migration of the hereditary trustees’ families to cities like Chennai, Mumbai, and beyond.
- The temple was eventually revived by T.N. Gopalan, a retired Public Works engineer from Tamil Nadu, with roots in the village. His efforts were pivotal in the restoration process.
- The restoration took just 57 days, during which the temple was brought back to life, and the deities were ceremonially re-enshrined as per the traditional scriptures.
Special Features
- The presiding deity of the temple is Vaikuntanatha Swamy.
- The sanctum houses the deity of Vaikuntanatha Swamy along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi on either side.
