Introduction

Location and Deities
The Bhutapureeswarar Temple is a 1000-year-old shrine located near Sriperumpudur bus terminus in Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known as Bhutapureeswarar, and Goddess Shakti, called Soundaravalli Ambal.

Puranic Significance
According to legend:

Bhutaganas, after mocking Lord Shiva during his Ananda Thandavam, were banished from Kailash by Shiva.
Seeking forgiveness, they performed penance and worshipped Lord Perumal.
Perumal guided them to bathe in Adisesha Theertha and pray to Lord Shiva, who eventually forgave them.
Grateful, the Bhutaganas constructed temples for Perumal, Lord Shiva (Bhutapureeswarar), and Jayabhutha Vinayagar under a sacred tree.

The temple gets its name “Bhootapuri” because it was built by goblins (Bhutaganas). The site is also associated with the Pancha Bhootha worship.

Temple Features
The temple includes shrines for multiple deities, including:

Brahma, Mahavishnu, Dakshinamurthy, Bhairavar, Natarajar, and Devi Durgai Amman.
Vinayagar, Maha Ganapati, Subramaniar, Bhakta Anjaneyar, Chandikeswarar, and Navagrahas.
Goddess Soundaravalli Ambal has a separate shrine, and the temple walls feature ancient inscriptions.
