Puranic Significance

• Divine Play (Thiruvilaiadal):
  • Goddess Parvathi wished to understand how Lord Shiva managed the universe.
  • She playfully covered Lord Shiva’s eyes, halting all worldly activities.
  • Lord Shiva revealed the Hasthavarna Jyothi (light from His hands) and disappeared into it.
• Goddess Parvathi as a Cow:
  • Shiva instructed Parvathi to descend to Earth as a cow and search for the light.
  • With the help of her brother, Lord Vishnu, Parvathi found the Komaleeya Jyothi on a Hastha Nakshathira day and reunited with Lord Shiva.
• Lord Shiva, full of Krupa (compassion), was hence named Krupakupareswarar.
• The temple became a Parihara Sthalam (remedial temple) for Hastha Nakshathira individuals.
