Introduction

• Location: The Mathura Kaliamman Temple is located in Siruvachur, Perambalur District, India, approximately 5 km from the town of Perambalur.
• Deity:
  • Primary Deity: Mathura Kaliamman (also known as Madurakaliamman).
  • Secondary Deity: Chelliamman, a local deity who was rescued by Madurai Kaliamman.
• Temple Access: The temple is open to devotees only on Mondays and Fridays. On other days, it is believed that Mathura Kaliamman resides with Chelliamman.

Puranic Significance:

• Legend of Kannagi: According to legend, Kannagi, the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappatikaram, calmed herself in this place after her departure from Madurai.
• Tantric and Divine Rescue:
  • Chelliamman’s Captivity: Chelliamman was enslaved by a tantric who used her for evil purposes.
  • Madurai Kaliamman’s Intervention: Madurai Kaliamman, upon visiting Siruvachur, fought and defeated the tantric, freeing Chelliamman.
  • Respect and Settlement: Chelliamman requested Madurai Kaliamman to stay in Siruvachur while she moved to Periaswami mount. Thus, during pujas, the first respect (Mudal Mariyadai) is offered to Chelliamman, and then to Mathura Kaliamman.
  • Friday Tradition: Since Madurai Kaliamman arrived on a Friday, she is believed to grant darshan to devotees on Mondays.

• Major Offerings and Prayers:
  • Lighting Flour Lamps: Devotees prepare flour lamps (Maa Vilakku) from rice pounded in the temple premises, as an offering to the deity. This practice is central to the worship here.
  • Prayers for Various Issues: The goddess is believed to help with issues such as marriage, childbearing, ailments, minor problems, litigations, and business matters.
  • Special Rituals: Devotees perform Angapradakshinam (rolling around the temple), milk abishek, and organize poor feeding.

Special Features:

• Architectural and Environmental Setting: The temple is set amidst scenic surroundings, including mounts, lakes, tanks, and green fields. It was renovated by Kulothunga Chola.
• Deity’s Representation:
  • Statue: The deity, about 4 feet tall, faces northward. She is depicted with weapons and an Akshayapatra (a vessel always full of food) in her four hands, sitting on a lion.
  • Absence of Demon: Unlike many Kali temples, Mathura Kaliamman’s statue does not feature a demon under her feet, symbolizing her merciful nature.
• Sri Chakra: The temple houses a Sri Chakra installed by His Holiness Swami Brahmmendra.
• Aiyanar: A guardian deity of the temple.

Festivals:

• Poochoridal Festival: Begins on the first Tuesday after the new moon in Chithirai (April-May). The main festival lasts thirteen days and includes significant rituals like mount worship (Malai Vazhipadu), a wedding festival with the deity on a silver horse and rath (car).
