Introduction
Location:
- Situated 70 km north of Coimbatore, on the banks of the Bhavani Sagar River.
- Located at the foot of the Kambaththa Raya Hills in the town of Sathyamangalam, Kongu Nadu.
Deity:
- The temple is dedicated to Lord Venugopala (a form of Lord Vishnu), depicted in a standing posture with Rukmini and Satyabhama, holding a conch and chakra while playing a flute.
Historical Significance:
- Believed to have been constructed by a Mysore ruler over 1500 years ago.
- Ramanuja and Vedantha Desika are said to have stayed here during their journey to Thiru Narayanapuram in Melkote.
Pandya Connection:
- The presence of numerous fish sculptures suggests the contribution of the Pandya dynasty in the temple’s construction.
Tipu Sultan’s Contribution:
- The treasurer of Tipu Sultan funded the temple’s renovations, including the current three-tier Raja Gopuram and five Kalasas on top.
- A sculpture of Tipu Sultan and Lord Venugopalaswamy is found in the 108-pillared Maha Mandapa.
Unique Features:
- Three Postures of Vishnu:
- Venugopalaswamy (standing), Lakshmi Narayana (sitting), and Ranganatha (reclining).
- Each deity has a dedicated sannidhi.
- Ayyappa Sannidhi: Special abhishekas are performed for Lord Ayyappa, and festivals related to him are celebrated.
Beliefs:
- Liberation from Doshams: Worshipping here can relieve individuals from doshams (flaws or misfortunes), symbolized by a large lizard sculpture on the western wall.
- Prarthana Sthalam for Unmarried People: Participating in Friday morning abhishekas at Mahalakshmi Sannidhi is believed to help find a life partner.
Festivals:
- Purattasi Brahmotsavam, Panguni Uthiram, Masi Makam, Vaikasi Visakam, Thiru Karthikai, Vaikunda Ekadashi, Sravana Deepam.
- These festivals are celebrated with grandeur and attract large crowds.
Temple Layout:
- The temple has a three-tier Rajagopuram with Balipeedam and Dwajasthambam immediately after.
- The temple houses other deities including Aadhavan, Vishwaksena, Anjaneyar, Andal, Ayyappa, and Chakkarathalwar.
