Introduction

Sitabani Temple is a sacred shrine located inside the Sitabani Reserve near Ramnagar Town in the Ramnagar Tehsil of Nainital District, Uttarakhand, India. This temple holds historical and mythological significance.

  • Sitabani Temple is situated within the Sitabani Reserve, which is near the renowned Jim Corbett National Park. This serene natural setting adds to the temple’s appeal and provides a tranquil environment for pilgrims and visitors.
  • The temple is located in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand, an area known for its natural beauty and spiritual significance.

Puranic Significance

Mythological Significance:

  • The temple is believed to be located at the hermitage of Sage Valmiki, who is renowned as the author of the epic Ramayana.
  • According to legend, Goddess Sita, the consort of Lord Rama, lived in this place during her period of exile before undergoing the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire). It is said that she entered the lap of Mother Earth during the Agni Pariksha, and as a result, the place came to be known as Sitabani or Sitavani.
  • The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sita and also features statues of her sons, Lava and Kush. Additionally, there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva within the temple complex.

Other Temples and Artifacts:

  • Besides the main temple, there is an ancient temple dedicated to Sage Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. This temple highlights the connection between the sage and the epic.
  • Various artifacts and relics can be found in and around the temple premises, such as amlaka stones, a headless image of dancing Ganesha, doorjambs, and architectural fragments.

Sacred Kund:

Festivals

Rama Navami is celebrated here with much fanfare. A fair is conducted during Rama Navami.
