Introduction

Brahmmapuriswarar Temple is dedicated to God Shiva located at Perunagar in Uthiramerur Taluk of Kanchipuram District. It is one of the ancient and significant temples near Uthiramerur. The Goddess in this Temple is named as Pattuvadhanambigai. Thai poosam festival is celebrated very grandly. This temple is situated on the Vandavasi Kancheepuram High Road. Perunagar is 22 km far from Kancheepuram.

Puranic Significance

It is noteworthy that the temple around Kancheepuram and regions in Thondai Mandalam covering Chennai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram occupies a place of importance in the religious history of Tamilnadu. No wonder that this temple is part of this glory. The temple has a number of epigraphic notes including the one that Kulothungan I had lit a lamp here. The note relating to Rajaraja II is considered still ancient. Mother Jeshta Devi idol belongs to Pallava period. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. There are many historic details about tax collection for the Vaikasi festival. Kings Ko Perum Singhan built this stone temple. Parts of the temple as wedding hall was built by a resident of this place named Tiruvan Tiru Kantharayan. Great poet Kachiappa Munivar had sung the glory of this place and temples in many verses. It is said that Ambigai, Durga, Ganapathi prayed to the Lord Shiva here. The divine tree for this temple is Vilvam. The temple is very magnificent. As this temple was blessed by Brahma, ten day festival for Brahma is celebrated every year. This place is also called Brahma theertham. Sages Parasara, Bharadwaja, Brugu, Chola King and Anisekhara Pandian had the darshan of Lord Brahmmeesar in this place on a Thai Poosam day. Lord Brahmma worshipped Lord Bhairava Shiva who plucked one of his heads this ancient temple is noted for Jeshta Devi and Bhairava worship.

Beliefs

People pray to Mother Pattuvadhana Ambikai for timely wedding and child boon. Devotees perform abishek to Lord and mother and offer vastras.

Special Features

This is an ancient temple worshipped by Brahma. This temple is considered very special for the Jyeshta Devi worship. She is one who ensures that poverty never ever appears in the lives of her devotees. This is much more than bestowing prosperity on one who is suffering. If we desire never to go through the throes of poverty and if we want our wealth never to get depleted, we must worship Sri Jyeshta Devi. Mother Jyeshta likes worshipping large forms of Ganesh. So there is a big Ganapathy and a Jyeshta Devi in the inner praharam. Worshipping this big Ganesha, that is worshipped by Jyeshta Devi removes misfortunes by the divine grace of both Ganesh and Mother Jyeshta Devi. The temple is at the northeast of the place having a five tier Rajagopuram with 7 kalasas. The entrance is at the south side. Lords Chakkara Vinayaka, Thondhi Vinayaka, Alageswarar tank, sacred tree Vanni, Balipeeta, flag post-Kodimaram, Nandhi Mandapam, Alankara Mandapam are in the first round of the prakara – lion pillar mandapam. Temple is facing east. The next round of the prakara and the presiding deity can be reached through the six steps of Rishi Gopura entrance. Mother Pattuvadhana Ambikai graces from a separate shrine. 12 Vinayakas adore the pillars of the Mandapam. Besides the 8 serpents-Ashta Nagas-there are shrines in the third prakara for Lord Brahmma, Nandideva, Kotravai (Kali), Lord Vallabha Vinayaka, Saptha Kannikas (seven virgins), 63 Nayanmars-celebrated Shiva devotees – Lord Maha Ganapathi, Lord Muruga with six faces, Lord Vishnu and Lord Dakshinamurthi. There is also a shrine for Mother Jeshta Devi. The Vimana has three beautiful Kalasa Lord Maha Bhairava as an idol in a green stone blesses the devotees from a shrine in the northeast corner of the inner prakara without a vahanam. The Vimana looks majestically with three kalasas. In the third round of the prakara are the eight serpents – Anandan, Vasuki, Dakshakan, Karkodagan, Sangan, Padman, Mahapadman and Kuligan. This belongs to the Thoonganai Mada temple category with three Kalasas on the Vimana – tower above the sanctum Sanctorum. The sanctum sanctorum of this temple is decorated in the shape of gajapristha. Renovation work of this temple in a mammoth four acre landscape is in progress. The divine tree for this temple is Vanni Tree. Lord Thiru Ooraga Perumal temple is in the centre of this place with separate shrines for Mothers. Chelli Amman in north, Paathiri Amman in South, Devendran Periandavar and Veerabadra Swami in the middle, Mari Amman in between them, Angalamman in southeast, Kilaroli Amman in northwest and Dharmaraja are the guardian deities and also the family deities for many in the place. The glory of Lord Brahmma Pureeswarar is sung by inspired and divine poet Kachiappa Munivar – titled Brahmeesar Pathittru Pathu Andhadhi and in the second canto of Kanchi Puranam.

Festivals

Thai Brahmotsavam and Thai Poosam in January-February; Masi Magam and Maha Shivrathri in February-March are the festivals celebrated in the temples besides monthly pradosha pujas. The 14 day Thai Brahmotsavam is very famous here with 5 day wedding festival, car festival on the 7th day, procession of the 63 Nayanmar on the 9th day, Thai Poosam Theerthavari on the 10th day.
