Introduction
Location:
- Located at North Mada Street, Thiruvannamalai Town, Thiruvannamalai District.
- Situated on the Girivalam route of Lord Arunachaleswara, Thiruvannamalai.
Deity:
- The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Boodhanarayana Perumal.
- The Utsavar (processional deity) is Narayana, along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple’s name is linked to the legend of Kamsa, the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna, who tried many tactics to kill the divine child, including sending Boodhana, a demon woman. Disguised as a beautiful woman, Boodhana tried to breastfeed Krishna to harm him, but the Lord, realizing her intentions, squeezed the life out of her.
- The Lord, known as Boodhanarayana, symbolizes the destruction of demons and evil.
- A devotee constructed a temple in honor of Lord Krishna based on this story. The original temple was lost, but after many years, Lord Krishna appeared in a devotee’s dream, revealing that the idol was buried under sand. The devotee recovered the idol and rebuilt the temple.
Beliefs and Practices:
- Boodhanarayana Perumal is also worshipped at Surulimalai in Theni district. In this temple, the Lord appears as a child (Balaka) but is depicted in a colossal form due to his encounter with Boodhana.
- The Lord is seated with his left leg bent, pressing the ground with his right, holding a conch in his right hand and offering protection (abhayahastha) with his left.
- The Lord is depicted riding Sri Garuda.
- The temple, which is over 1500 years old, is small in size with a single prakara (outer courtyard).
- Sri Garuda, Thumbikkai Azhwar, and Sri Anjaneya are present in front of the shrine, with another statue of Anjaneya sculpted on a pillar.
Temple Practices and Festivals:
- Devotees begin their Girivalam (circumambulation of the Arunachala Hill) from this temple and conclude it here, offering theertha (holy water) from the shrine at the entrance as a mark of reverence.
- Special Offerings:
- On the last Saturday of Purattasi month (September-October), a large quantity of rice is cooked and spread before the shrine as Prasad.
- Krishna Jayanthi (Lord Krishna’s birthday) is celebrated with special Tirumanjanam (holy bath) and rituals.
- Ekadasi, Tiruvonam star days, and full moon days are significant occasions for performing Tirumanjanams.
- On Wednesdays, devotees offer Tulsi garlands to Chakkarathalwar with Sweet Pudding (Nivedhana).
Festivals:
- Sri Krishna Jayanthi (August-September)
- Ekadasi days (11th day from New Moon or Full Moon)
- Tiruvonam star days
- Special Tirumanjanams on Full Moon (Poornima) days.
