Puranic Significance
- A merchant traveled to Kerala to buy peppers and sell them in his town.
- On his return, a mysterious stone was found in his horse-drawn cart.
- Despite multiple attempts to throw it away, the stone kept reappearing in the cart.
- People were astonished by this miracle.
- That night, Goddess Durga appeared in the merchant’s dream and revealed that she was the stone, coming to protect the people.
- She instructed the merchant to install and worship the stone at a specific location.
- The stone was enshrined at the designated place, becoming the sacred idol of Durga Amman.
- As a divine sign, only one person from the Chettiar family (merchant’s lineage) continues to serve as the temple’s Dharmakartha.
Special Features
The local people believe that worshipping this goddess before starting any new endeavor ensures success. Every year, a grand festival is celebrated at this temple in the month of Panguni. Weekly poojas are conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays, with the Tuesday worship being particularly special, as it is observed with a festive spirit
