Introduction

  • Location: The Nadapur Nadanapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated in Nadapur village, within the Thiruvarur circle of Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, India. The village of Nadapur is home to this small yet significant temple. The presiding deity is known as Nadanapureeswarar in the form of a Lingam, and the mother goddess is referred to as Nadana Nayaki.

Puranic Significance

  • Age and History: The temple is believed to be around 1300 years old, reflecting its historical and cultural significance in the region. Although the temple itself faces the east, the main gate is positioned to the south. The temple complex is enriched by a Nagalingam tree and a Tirthakulam (sacred water tank).
  • Divine Grace in the Sanctum: In the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Nadanapureeswarar blesses devotees. At the entrance to the sanctum, Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha) is positioned on the left, while Lord Thandayuthapani (Murugan) is on the right. A Pradosha Nandi (sacred bull) is located opposite the entrance.
  • Additional Deities and Features:
    • Ambikai Nadana Nayaki faces south, while other deities include:
      • Vinayagar in the prakaram (outer courtyard).
      • Murugan with Vallitheivanai in the sanctum.
      • Dakshinamurti in the koshta (niche of the temple wall).
      • Durga in the north, Bhairava in the north-east.
      • Navagraha (Nine planets), along with Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), and Naga (serpent deities) near the Nagalinga tree.

    • Blessings for sons.

  • Chola Legacy and Inscriptions: This temple is one of the 108 temples built by the Chola dynasty. The temple contains several inscriptions, reflecting its historical and architectural heritage. Over time, however, the temple had suffered from neglect and disintegration, but restoration efforts began to restore its glory.

Restoration and Consecration

  • Recent Renovations: In September 2013, the temple underwent significant restoration work, which included the consecration of the deities and the performance of the Kumbabhishekam (temple consecration ceremony).
  • Golden Idols Discovery: During the restoration, 14 golden idols were discovered underground. These idols are being preserved in the royal treasury, adding a layer of reverence and historical intrigue to the temple.
