Introduction

Prahladpuri Temple was a Narashima temple located in Multan city of Punjab province in Pakistan, adjacent to the Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya. Named after Prahlada, it is dedicated to the deity Narasimha. The temple is presently in ruins, since its destruction in 1992 by a Muslim mob in retaliation for the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, India and the site is currently owned by Evacuee Trust Property Board. The temple is located on top of a raised platform (mandapa) in the southern tip of the Fort of Multan, adjacent to the venerated tomb of Baha’ul Haq Zakariya.

Puranic Significance

The original temple of Prahladpuri is said to have been built by Prahlad, son of Hiranyakashipu, the king of Multan (Kashya-papura) in honor of Narsing Avatar, an incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu, who emerged from the pillar to save Prahlada. The Prahladapuri temple like the Sun Temple of Multan had been destroyed after Muslim conquest of Multan, suffered several material losses and was reduced to a nondescript shrine by the 19th century. It is located on top of a raised platform inside the Fort of Multan, adjacent to tomb of Hazrat Baha’ul Haq Zakariya. A mosque has subsequently built adjacent to temple. The present day Pakistan, and it was constructed by Bhakta Prahalada, before several thousands of years, and it is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. This temple was further destroyed by some miscreants. Since then, the minority Hindus in Pakistan are making peaceful protests to build the ancient temple. However, the original deity of Lord Narasimha was safely kept in Haridwar at Narasimha dham Road. This temple was built by King who has ruled over the entire earth for several thousands of years, and it was built in order to express his love and affection on Lord Narasimha. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and in order to save him from his father Hiranyakashipu, the Narasimha Avatar takes place. After becoming the king of the entire earth, Prahalad had ruled over the kingdom in a prosperous manner.
