1. Historical Background: The temple was built in 1651 AD by Mukundaprasad Roy Choudhury, a wrestler and a member of the Roy Zamindars, who ruled the village of Samta at that time.
2. Architectural Style: The Madangopal Jiu Temple is one of the largest Achala temples in Bengal, characterized by its roof with eight slopes. The temple is known for its distinctive architectural style, which includes terracotta ornamentation.
3. Worshiped Deities: The primary deities worshiped in the temple are Radha and Madangopal. The idol of Radha is shorter than the idol of Madangopal.
4. Idol Materials: The idols of the deities are made of eight metals, known as ashtadhatu.
5. Unique Historical Feats: Mukundaprasad Roy Choudhury, the temple’s builder, was renowned for his physical strength. He was known to carry two heavy stone dumbbells across a small wooden bridge to the temple without showing signs of fatigue. One of these stones is still kept near the temple.
6. River Relocation: Originally, the Rup Narayan River used to flow alongside the temple. However, over time, the river’s course shifted farther away from the temple.
7. Restoration and Reconstruction: The temple is currently in a state of ruins, but reconstruction work began in the early 2010s. During this period, the deities were temporarily moved to a nearby house.
8. Architectural Features: The temple has a main entrance with three arches facing south and an additional entrance on the east side. The roof with eight slopes is a prominent feature of the temple’s design.
