Introduction

The Kumarasamipatti Sri Ellaipidari Amman Temple, located in the village of Kumarasamipatti in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, is a sacred shrine dedicated to Goddess Shakti.

Puranic Significance

Primary Deity and Origin:

The main deity of the temple is Goddess Ellaipidari Amman, who faces the west side in the temple.
This temple is ancient and holds immense power and significance in Salem.

Historical Background:

The temple was originally built by a Chera King, and it has undergone renovations by various chieftains over time.
The legend associated with the temple’s origin narrates that around 1000 years ago, some devotees were returning from Ayodhya Pattinam after worshipping Lord Sri Rama. They encountered a large snake spreading its hood on their way, which caused panic and led them to fall at a particular spot.
That night, Goddess Amman appeared in a dream to an elderly man in the village, informing him that she resided beneath the place where people had fallen. She instructed him to build a temple and conduct regular pujas, promising prosperity to the village’s people.
The following morning, the villagers discovered a beautiful idol of Goddess Amman at the indicated spot. They constructed the temple at that very location, installed the idol, and named her Ellai Pidari Amman.
The noted religious scholar Sri Tiru Muruga Kripananda Variar visited the temple and offered his prayers to Mother Ellai Pidari Amman.
Chera Kings and chieftains traditionally began their work after offering prayers to Goddess Ellai Pidari Amman.

Festivals and Rituals:

The temple celebrates a grand six-day festival in Panguni (March-April).
All the days of the Aadi month (July-August) are celebrated as a festival in the temple.
As a part of the rituals, lime fruit is placed on the lap of Mother Ellai Pidari Amman and offered as Prasad. Women consume this lime for fulfilling their desire for children.
Those who are mentally ill sometimes walk through the fire pit in the temple premises for a cure.
People who face obstacles in finalizing marriage proposals light ghee lamps in the shrine of Mother Ellai Pidari Amman for nine consecutive Fridays, hoping for a happy resolution.
Devotees also light Maa Vilakku (lamps) to seek blessings for the cure of vision and stomach problems.
It is believed that Goddess Ellai Pidari Amman grants boons and fulfills the wishes of her devotees.
