Introduction
- Location:
- Situated in Kozhikuthi Village, Kuttalam Circle, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.
- Kozhikuthi is about 2 kilometers north of Moovalur and west of Mayiladuthurai.
- Puranic Significance:
- The temple dates back to the 11th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Sabhapadeeswarar and the goddess Abirami.
- The temple is part of a spiritual area with several nearby temples, including Thondreeswarar Temple, Azhakianathar Temple, and Thirajapuram Shiva Temple.
- The temple’s history is linked to a king named Nirmalan who had a sinful nature. After penance under a royal tree by the banks of the Cauvery River, he was cured and attained a vision of Perumal, leading him to become a Maharishi. The place was initially called Kodihati and Babavimosanapuram due to its power to remove sins, later evolving to Kozhikuthi.
- Beliefs:
- The temple is known for its ability to remove sins and provide spiritual healing. It is believed that the Lord’s presence purifies devotees and offers relief from their negative karma.
- Special Features:
- The temple is facing east, with the Lord Shiva shrine and the Mother Abirami shrine located next to each other. There is a front hall connecting the two shrines.
- The goddess is placed towards the south in a small shrine, and the temple features Karurai with Tenmugan and Lingobhava Durgai.
- Vinayagar and Subramaniya are located in the temple complex, along with a Navagraha Mandapam in the north-east and a Bhairava shrine in the next sanctum.
- Nandi and the altar are placed directly opposite outside the front hall.
