Puranic Significance:
- Parasurama’s Rage on Kshatriyas:
- Sage Jamadagni and his wife Renukadevi resided in this region with their son, Parasurama.
- King Kartha Veeryarjuna, who had 1000 hands and the blessings of Lord Vinayaka, visited the sage’s home while hunting. After a tiring day, the king and his men were hosted by the sage with food from the divine cow Kamadenu.
- When the king demanded the cow, Sage Jamadagni refused. The king forcibly seized Kamadenu, and in retaliation, the cow created an army that defeated the king’s forces.
- Seeking vengeance, King Kartha Veeryarjuna beheaded Sage Jamadagni and killed his wife, Renukadevi.
- Renukadevi’s spirit transformed into Bhadrakali and granted Parasurama an axe to avenge his parents’ death. Parasurama destroyed 21 generations of Kshatriyas to fulfill his vow.
- Parasurama later built this temple to honor Lord Shiva, who was worshipped by his father, Sage Jamadagni.
- Jamadagneeswarar:
- A Pandya king passing through the region had his horse fall and refuse to rise. A divine voice instructed him to dig the ground, where the king found a Shivalinga that was worshipped by Sage Jamadagni. The deity was named Jamadagneeswarar.
Beliefs:
- Devotees pray to Lord Shiva (Jamadagneeswarar) and Mother Nallamangai for the fulfillment of their wishes.
- Common prayers include offering abhishekam (ritual bathing of the idol) and archana (ritual prayers), often accompanied by the offering of vastras (clothes).
Special Features:

- The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old.
- A special shrine dedicated to Renukadevi, located in the northeast corner of the temple, is also known as Gangai Amman. This shrine honors Renukadevi, who is said to have brought Ganga water for Sage Jamadagni’s worship.
